What Population sd is
Population standard deviation is a measure of how spread out the values within a population are. It is calculated by taking the square root of the variance of a population.
Steps for calculating population standard deviation:
-
Calculate the mean of the population.
-
Subtract the mean from each value in the population.
-
Square each of the differences obtained in step 2.
-
Add up all of the squared differences.
-
Divide the sum obtained in step 4 by the total number of values in the population. This is the variance of the population.
-
Take the square root of the variance. This is the population standard deviation.
Examples
- Population sd can be used to determine the standard deviation of a group of individuals within a certain population.
- Population sd can be used to compare the variance of two different populations.
- Population sd can be used to measure the spread of values within a given population.
- Population sd can be used to measure the degree of variation of a given population.
- Population sd can be used to calculate the average distance of the data points from the population mean.
