Population sd

What Population sd is

Population standard deviation is a measure of how spread out the values within a population are. It is calculated by taking the square root of the variance of a population.

Steps for calculating population standard deviation:

  1. Calculate the mean of the population.

  2. Subtract the mean from each value in the population.

  3. Square each of the differences obtained in step 2.

  4. Add up all of the squared differences.

  5. Divide the sum obtained in step 4 by the total number of values in the population. This is the variance of the population.

  6. Take the square root of the variance. This is the population standard deviation.

Examples

  1. Population sd can be used to determine the standard deviation of a group of individuals within a certain population.
  2. Population sd can be used to compare the variance of two different populations.
  3. Population sd can be used to measure the spread of values within a given population.
  4. Population sd can be used to measure the degree of variation of a given population.
  5. Population sd can be used to calculate the average distance of the data points from the population mean.
