Frequency table

What Frequency table is

A frequency table is a chart that shows the frequency of different values in a dataset. It is used to organize and display data in a meaningful way. Frequency tables are often used to summarize categorical data.

Steps for creating a frequency table:

  1. Count the number of times each value occurs in the dataset.

  2. Arrange the values in a table in order from least to greatest.

  3. For each value, calculate the frequency, which is the number of times it appears in the dataset.

  4. Record the frequencies in the table.

  5. Calculate the relative frequency, which is the frequency divided by the total number of values in the dataset.

  6. Record the relative frequencies in the table.

Examples

  1. A frequency table can be used to show the distribution of a categorical variable by counting the number of observations for each category. For example, a frequency table of eye color could show the number of people with blue, brown, green, or other eye colors.

  2. A frequency table can also be used to show the distribution of a numerical variable by grouping the data into ranges and counting the number of observations that fall within each range. For example, a frequency table of test scores could show how many students earned scores between 0-10, 11-20, 21-30, etc.
