Convenience sample

What Convenience sample is

A convenience sample is a type of sampling method in which the researcher uses the population that is most readily available to them. This type of sampling is often used when it is not feasible to use other sampling methods, such as random sampling.

Steps for Convenience Sample:

  1. Define the population of interest: The first step in conducting a convenience sample is to identify the population of interest, which is the group of individuals from which the sample will be drawn.

  2. Identify the sampling frame: The sampling frame is the group from which the sample will actually be drawn. This group should be representative of the target population.

  3. Select the sample: The researcher then selects individuals from the sampling frame, usually in a way that is convenient for them.

  4. Analyze the data: Once the sample has been collected, the researcher can then analyze the data to draw conclusions.

Examples

  1. A convenience sample may be used in a survey of college students in which the researcher approaches students on campus and asks them to participate.

  2. A convenience sample may be used in a restaurant survey in which the researcher collects survey responses from customers who are already in the restaurant.

  3. A convenience sample may be used in a marketing study in which the researcher surveys shoppers at a local mall.
