A discrete random variable is a random variable that can take on a countable number of distinct values. Examples of discrete random variables include the number of heads when flipping a coin or the number of children in a family.

Steps for Discrete Random Variable:

  1. Specify the possible values the random variable can take.

  2. Assign a probability to each possible value. This is known as the probability mass function (PMF).

  3. Calculate the expected value (or mean) of the random variable.

  4. Calculate the variance and standard deviation of the random variable.

  5. Use the PMF to calculate the probability of a particular outcome.
